SMP FAQ

Scalp Micropigmentation is a cosmetic tattoing technique which conceals balding.

Tiny deposits of pigment are placed in the scalp skin to make a copy of your freshly shaved stubble in the areas of hair loss creating the illusion of a full head of hair.

If your hair is thinning we can create the illusion of thicker hair using the same process to diminish the exposed scalp and create a more uniform tone and look.

A Scalp Micropigmentation treatment for hair loss is performed over three sessions which are typically spaced one week apart.

This depends on your case and the extent of hair loss but usually around three hours.

Yes, SMP is also a solution for women’s hair loss. Whether your hair thinning is evenly diffused or concentrated at the crown or hairline, we can help you achieve a denser looking full head of hair.

We account for personal preferences but recommend an age appropriate hairline suited to your individual features. Referencing certain facial features is the key to creating the most natural and appropriate result.

Everyone has a different threshold to pain and many factors determine an individual's sensitivity. It doesn’t ‘tickle’ but is tolerable for most clients.

We can apply a numbing gel for clients who are experiencing discomfort.

Three to five years (depending on the level of sun exposure in your lifestyle). It’s better to have a softer treatment that can be re-toned to effect a natural look again rather than a cruder dark approach that doesn’t leave you that option.

The effect of each layering is usually subtle enough to not be noticeable. Some redness resembling mild sunburn can be evident for 4 - 24 hours after a session typically.

Shaving or buzzing down every 1-3 days will retain the most natural look. The concealment of balding is an illusion created by imitating your existing stubble. As stubble grows the contrast between it and the tattoo imitation eventually becomes visible.

For the shaved head look result it is important to shave down before each treatment session. Adding density to an existing hairline, crown or thinning area of longer hair does not require the head to be shaved.

Yes! Scalp Micropigmentation isn’t just for male pattern baldness. It is also used to conceal scars from previous surgeries or injuries. Both FUE and FUT transplant scars can be concealed with SMP.

We prefer that you come to each session with a shaved head from the day before. This is our reference for building the stubble match and blend.

We recommend trying to keep an oil neutral scalp through occasional gentle exfoliation and moisturising if necessary.

You can shave your head every day and wash it as well. The pigment is under several layers of skin.

Wear protective sunscreen or a hat whenever you are going out and expecting to be in direct sunlight for over an hour. Too much exposure to direct sunlight can cause the pigments to fade prematurely.

Cost for SMP is case by case, depending on the scale of hair loss and the scope of work required. Three sessions spaced a week apart are required for most clients. Scar concealment for FUE and FUT are from $800 to $1800. SMP for the typical male pattern balding client ranges from $3500 to $5500 for complete scalp transformations.

Once the three initial dates are scheduled a 50% deposit is required within 48 hours. The remainder is payable prior to or at the first session.
